How to Deal with Age Spots on Legs

How to Deal with Age Spots on Legs

As the years go on you may notice some darker spots on your legs that weren’t always there. Unfortunately, age spots on legs are a fairly common occurrence for many women. But, don’t fret! There are ways to deal with these pesky age spots and get your legs looking better than ever.

What Are Age Spots Anyway?

Age Spots are dark spots that appear on our skin and can happen to any type of skin and any skin tone. You may also hear them referred to as sun spots or hyperpigmentation. The spots are benign pigmented areas that are usually caused by ultraviolet rays from the sun. UV rays cause our pigment-producing cells to produce more melanin, and more melanin means a darker skin tone. It’s common for such age spots to appear all over the body, but the legs are an area where they can concentrate.

Another reason for leg age spots is if you have ever suffered from psoriasis, eczema, or acne on your legs. These skin conditions usually cause inflammation and can often result in skin breakage. As these heal, the skin produces more melanin, resulting in darker spots.

Prevention Is Key to Stop Age Spots on Legs

Before we talk about getting rid of the age spots on legs we may already have – let’s focus on making sure we don’t get any more! One key prevention tactic is to exfoliate regularly. Use our Welcome to the Scrub coconut body scrub to slough off dead skin cells, which will prevent clogged pores, which can lead to acne and eventual scarring and age spots.

Our body scrub uses natural cane sugar to exfoliate, while coconut oil keeps the skin hydrated to prevent dryness and protects it from harmful bacteria. It also uses vitamin E to defend the skin from free radicals and environmental damage that may cause dark spots on the legs.

If your legs are going to be at all exposed to the sun, we recommend ALWAYS applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, such as our Chase the Sun SPF 30 Moisturizer with natural zinc-oxide.

Using sunscreen will also prevent any leg spots you have from getting darker and further the steps you take to get rid of any spots you may already have on your legs.

How to Get Rid of Age Spots on Legs

When looking to get rid of existing leg age spots look for lotions that will both hydrate and brighten the skin. Our Island Time Spray Lotion is great for this as we made sure to include anti-aging ingredients in this lotion that you normally only find in face products!

These age-defying natural ingredients include aloe vera, witch hazel, Vitamin E, and rose water, and they're the perfect hyperpigmentation treatment. They work together to hydrate and condition the skin while brightening the complexion and eventually lightening any dark spots. (These are definitely not ingredients to avoid in skincare!)

Also, look for products that contain an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) that will brighten the skin. AHAs remove the top layer of skin cells and renew the complexion.
A great, gentle way to add an AHA to your body skincare routine is to use our Hometown Honey Bar Soap. This soap contains goat’s milk, which naturally includes lactic acid (an AHA) to diminish dark spots on legs, and olive oil, which contains oleic acid and polyphenols which are micronutrients that improve both the texture and complexion of the skin.

Other Options

If you are looking to get rid of your leg age spots quickly – you may need to enlist the help of a professional. Reach out to your dermatologist to discuss options, which might include laser therapy, cryotherapy, chemical peels, or prescription treatments.

Stick With It

As annoying as they may be, age spots on legs are harmless. If you are looking to get rid of them naturally then the key is consistency and patience. Continue to exfoliate and hydrate regularly to keep your legs healthy and nourished, and remember to always, always, always apply an SPF if your legs are going to see the sun at all. Keep with your scrubs and body lotion to ensure your legs are always ready for shorts and warm weather.
