This year, more people than ever got together with families and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving (and the easing of all those pandemic restrictions). In fact, more than 53 million people traveled to see loved ones this year, the biggest single year increase in travel since 2005!
We laughed, we ate, we enjoyed, we gave thanks -- and now we may be seeing the consequences on our skin. If you’re dealing with post-Thanksgiving skincare woes, here’s how you can soothe your skin.
The Problem: Holiday Meal Breakouts
If you enjoyed goodies like pies, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, your tummy’s probably very happy -- but your skin may be reeling. Why? Simple sugars, refined carbohydrates, and processed foods can cause inflammation in the skin and aggravate acne.
Translation? Swollen, red, and broken out skin.
The Solution
First, we recommend that you drink lots of water to flush out any toxins and help purify your skin. From there, you can soothe and clarify your angry skin with active ingredients like:
- Jojoba oil: An emollient that’s very similar in composition to our own sebum, jojoba oil can deeply moisturize the skin and restore the natural barrier (usually compromised when your skin is red and aggravated) for more even, soothed skin. Find it in our High Society botanical face oil.
- Glycolic acid: A gentle and effective AHA, glycolic acid can slough off dead cells and alleviate breakouts without causing too much irritation.
- Vitamin C: An MVP antioxidant, vitamin C is well-known for its ability to calm inflammation, reduce breakouts, and protect the skin from future issues. Perfect for broken out, irritated skin. Find it in our Seeking C vitamin C serum.
The Problem: Dark Circles and Dullness
In the same vein, lots of travel, sleepless nights, and dehydration can lead to dark circles and sagging, dull skin.
The Solution
To revive dark circles and tired skin, you’ll need:
- Peptides: Peptides are proteins found naturally in the skin that trigger collagen production, ultimately minimizing the wrinkles and plumping the skin.
- Hyaluronic acid: A powerful substance found naturally in the skin, hyaluronic acid is a humectant that can draw in moisture and deeply hydrate tired skin. Exactly what you need.
- Green tea polyphenols: The catechins and polyphenol antioxidants in green tea have also been known to fight free radical damage and protect against the five most common environmental toxins: pesticides, smoking, mycotoxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, and arsenic.
Find them all in the All In eye cream.
The Problem: Dry and Flaking Skin
Finally, dry central heating, airplane air, and cold winter wind can lead to stripped, dry, and flaking skin.
The Solution
To effectively combat skin dehydration, you’ll need to apply an effective combination of humectant, emollient, and occlusive ingredients (you can read more about why this combo is so important here). To this end, our favorites are:
- Hyaluronic acid as your humectant
- Jojoba oil and marula oil as your emollients
- Cocoa butter as your occlusive
Find them all in Daydreamer hyaluronic acid moisturizer.
