Self-care and skincare go hand-in-hand for us here at Eight Saints. We love to treat ourselves to a night in of relaxation and pampering. And, don’t worry, doing so doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are our tips to enjoy the best at-home facial.
Set the Mood
First things first, let’s set the tone for our self-care night. Turn on that ‘do not disturb’ because we will not be answering any calls or texts while we relax. Second, find the perfect playlist of soothing music.
“Hey Siri, play the Spa playlist.”
Next, turn off the overhead lights and light your favorite candle or fill your diffuser with the perfect scented oil. Get a glass of water with cucumber or your favorite berries sprinkled in. If you are really feeling spicy, go ahead and make it a sparkling water. Put on your favorite robe, or if we are being totally honest, favorite pair of holey sweats that you would never be seen in but are your favorite things ever and get ready to relax.
Now that the scene is set for an at home facial, let’s prep the skin.
At Home Facial Steps
Start Fresh
Make sure your face is fresh and ready for the at home spa mask you’re about to apply to ensure you get the best results possible. If you haven’t tried it, this would be the perfect time to try double cleansing.
We recommend starting with an oil-based cleanser as like dissolves like. This means it will dissolve any oil-based cosmetics as well as the natural oil (sebum) our skin produces throughout the day. We offer Bright Side, our creamy fruit oil-based cleanser for this step.
Fully rinse off your first cleanser and then follow with a water-based cleanser, like our clay cleanser Down to Earth. This will remove anything left over, clear out the pores, and truly prep your skin for the next step. Really focus in on the areas where oil tends to build up like the nooks and crannies around the nose and mouth.
Next Step, Exfoliate
Just like cleansing, this is an important step to ready the skin for your mask to be able to deeply penetrate the skin and ensure you see the best results. Use our Zen Out of Ten bamboo scrub, which is gentle yet effective to slough off any dead skin cells that might clog pores.
If you have sensitive skin, go ahead and exfoliate the morning of - or even the day before your mask - so you don’t overwhelm your skin. Our bamboo scrub is perfect for sensitive skin as it doesn’t have any of the chemicals some of those harsher exfoliants may contain.
Masks On, Everyone
Now that your skin is perfectly prepared and ready for your spa night at home, let’s get to the best part. Apply our No Plans Desert Rose Mask to the face in a smooth, even layer (avoiding the eye area). The facial mask should be left on for at least ten minutes.
Our natural kaolin clay mask works to maintain hydration by detoxing the skin of pollutants and impurities. Pink clay is known for smoothing and softening the skin, which is exactly what this mask does without the drying qualities a lot of clay face masks come with. We skip this by adding antioxidants and minerals to make sure the skin stays hydrated throughout and after the mask is washed off.
Now, what you do in your relaxation time of letting the mask sit is up to you. But, we recommend truly taking this time for yourself. Forget about any tasks, and focus on yourself. Whether you just sit and listen to the peaceful music from your playlist, meditate, or watch your favorite guilty pleasure movie.
Or, if you want to give yourself even more of a spa-like experience at home – add steam. While you can use one of the fancy at-home steaming mechanisms, you don’t have to break the bank for a spa day at home. Fill a bowl of hot water and add some orange slices. Position your face over the bowl with a towel over your head to really open up your pores while masking.
No matter what you do, just make sure to treat yourself!
Moisturize and Massage
After your mask has had to time to sit and you have relaxed go ahead and rinse it off with lukewarm water. Now, you may think your night of self-care is done but to get a true at-home spa experience, don’t forget the very important follow-up steps.
Once your face is patted dry, it’s time to moisturize. You want to make sure any hydration lost from your mask is restored. This makes a natural face moisturizer - like our hyaluronic acid packed Daydreamer - a necessary part of your at home spa kit.
If you have oily or acne-prone skin, stick to just applying our Pep Rally hyaluronic acid serum. This will seep into the pores and restore moisture without clogging pores. If you have drier skin, apply Pep Rally and follow it up with our Up the Anti anti-aging night cream. It is packed with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to soften and smooth the skin while you sleep.
After you apply your hydration products (from thinnest to thickest), give yourself a facial massage. Whether you use your hands or your trusted jade roller this will boost blood circulation and improve lymphatic drainage. Begin at the chin and gently stroke outwards. Make sure to get every part of the face and neck and behind the ears. Don’t push too hard, focus on draining and not rubbing – keep it light.
Leave it to the Professionals
There are some don’ts when doing an at-home facial. Never do any extractions yourself. As tempting as it may be to pop that zit or dig deeper into your pores this is not something for DIY-ers. Doing this yourself can lead to infections, scarring, and usually more clogged pores and breakouts.
Also, watch the devices. If indulging in micro-needling, LED lights, or any of the such – stick to just one per spa night. As we said, we keep our spa days at home simple and let the natural ingredients of our products do all the work.
Treat Yourself
Did you sense our theme? Treating yourself doesn’t have to be expensive but it is definitely important. Take care of yourself, your skin, your mental health, and give yourself a spa treatment at home whenever you need a pick-me-up.
